General AmeriCorps Project Information:  KyCC is a statewide coalition of Kentucky colleges and universities, promoting college access, college attainment, and community impact. The KyCC VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program places VISTA members throughout the Commonwealth to combat poverty and build capacity in community organizations, Kentucky colleges and universities, the Appalachian Region and the Kentucky Promise Zone. KyCC achieves its anti-poverty goals through service activities in the following focus areas: Economic Opportunity, Education, and Healthy Futures.

 

VISTA Terms & Benefits:

  • AmeriCorps VISTA is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens age 18 and older

  • Full-time (40 hours/week), one-year commitment

  • Monthly living allowance of $1,028 per month ($13,400/year) before taxes

  • Upon completion, choose between education award ($6,195) or cash award ($1,800)

  • Forbearance/deferment of federal student loans payments

  • Eligible to receive healthcare and childcare allowances

  • Vacation (10) and sick days (10)

  • One year of Priority Eligibility with the Federal Government

  • May be eligible for relocation reimbursement (must be relocating 50 miles or more for service; $1,500 value)

University of Louisville Trager Institute Age-Friendly VISTA

VISTA Position Description:  The VISTA member for Age-Friendly Louisville (AFL) will support key issues faced by economically vulnerable older adults of Louisville. The member will work with the Age-Friendly Louisville leadership and members to create a long-term plan for ensuring the viability of the initiative in the following areas: Housing; Mobility & Access; Social Participation, Respect & Inclusion & Community Supports & Health Services. The member will assist to revise strategic plan with updated priorities, coordinate monthly leadership meetings and periodic community building events with leaders of each focus area group, increase awareness of the AFL via media/social media to expand services economically vulnerable older adults and maintain the operations manual for the purpose of sustainability.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist AFL leadership to update the strategic plan.

    1. Work with AFL leadership to review the current strategic plan against new opportunities

    2. Investigate with AFL leadership what has been missed in achieving the strategic plan.

    3. Incorporate the current priorities and opportunities into the revised strategic plan with emphasis on sustainability.

  2. Plan and coordinate monthly leadership meetings and periodic community building events with leaders of each focus group.

    1. Recruit volunteers and update the volunteer database

    2. Develop agenda and create calendar invites with agenda, minutes and zoom invites for leadership meetings and focus meetings.

    3. Facilitate the leadership meetings.

  3. Increase awareness of the AFL via media/social media to expand services economically vulnerable older adults.

    1. Develop digital and print media, press releases to increase awareness of AFL

    2. Enhance web content per requests from leadership & workgroups of each focus area

    3. Collect and share impact and success stories via social media.

  4. Maintain the operations manual for the purpose of sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Basic qualifications for this VISTA project include an interest in increasing the quality of life for older adults in Louisville, writing/editing, public speaking, and group facilitation, as well as, basic skill in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred qualifications include an interest and/or entry level skill in learning web design and graphic design, and modest skill with public speaking to small groups.

• Other trainings as offered by the UofL Trager Institute, including but not limited to: Project ECHO

sessions in variety of topics relating to older adult health and wellbeing, and online/in-person learning

sessions on inter-professional care models for the care of older adults.
